On World Asthma Day, marked worldwide on the first Tuesday of May, the doctors at the Victor Babes Hospital Timisoara sound the alarm about the effects of this disease that make one in 20 school-age children in Romania to suffer from asthma.

According to the medical unit, statistics show that almost 6% of the population suffers from bronchial asthma, which means that about 1 million Romanians struggle with this disease.

The definition of asthma is as follows: a chronic disease characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, which causes difficulty in breathing, coughing, chest pain, especially at night and in the early hours of the morning, but also wheezing (sounds during breathing) , the medical unit transmits in a press release.

This condition can vary in severity, from mild symptoms to severe, life-threatening episodes.

According to doctors, in recent years, however, the form of severe or therapy-resistant asthma appears more and more often. This disease becomes a major health problem, the treatment of the pathology becoming an essential concern in the field of pulmonology.

Moreover, low adherence to treatment, comorbidities or environmental factors can cause a poor control of the disease.

The main factors involved in asthma include inflammation of the airways and their hypersensitivity to various triggering agents.

These can be allergens, such as pollen, mites, mold, chemical irritants from the environment, respiratory infections and intense physical exercise. Non-allergic factors such as cold, dry air or air pollution can also worsen asthma symptoms.

The diagnosis of asthma is based on the patient’s medical history, reported symptoms, physical examination, and additional tests, such as spirometry, which measures the volume and flow of air in the lungs.

Asthma treatment aims to control symptoms and prevent exacerbations. This may include anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce airway inflammation, bronchodilators to widen the airways, and symptom control medications to keep asthma under control long-term.
