The technological revolution continues! Google’s medical assistant can take the place of experienced doctors

Google has announced the launch of Med-Gemini, an artificial intelligence tool designed to support the work of doctors by taking over part of their daily tasks.

The technology is derived from the Gemini model, adjusted to connect to relevant medical databases and optimized for the specific needs of the medical field.

The major difference between Med-Gemini and other medical artificial intelligences is that Google has emphasized the self-training capability of the system by assimilating information from previous diagnoses made by doctors in similar situations. Interestingly, Med-Gemini uses Google Search to filter and select relevant medical information from the sea of content available online, including non-scientific articles or erroneous information, writes BGR.

The conventional experience in medical consultations varies from a quick and superficial diagnosis, to extensive lists of tests and finally to effective treatment by an experienced doctor. Med-Gemini promises to simplify this journey by directly providing an accurate diagnosis and effective therapeutic recommendations, eliminating the need for multiple appointments and associated costs.

Google claims that Med-Gemini’s diagnoses were more accurate than those of human doctors

In the tests carried out, Med-Gemini was compared with 14 medical benchmarks. More impressively, Google claims that Med-Gemini’s diagnoses were more accurate than those of human doctors and other specialized AI models. Med-Gemini achieved an accuracy score of 91.1% using a special feature that guides the search based on uncertainty.

However, the widespread implementation of Med-Gemini in regular medical practice remains uncertain. Challenges include building patient trust in AI diagnoses and adapting the technology to mimic human empathy and intuition. Google itself suggests that Med-Gemini should serve more as a support tool for doctors, allowing them to focus on complex cases and reduce pressure on overburdened medical systems.
