“Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu (ULBS) climbed six positions in the national ranking of universities, being one of the 14 university institutions that obtains an above average score. The ranking published annually by the Ministry of Education shows that this year the University of Sibiu had the biggest increase compared to last year.

The Ministry of Education has published the annual national ranking of Romanian universities, called the “National Metaranking” for the year 2023. It includes 30 higher education institutions.

The results show that “Lucian Blaga” University from Sibiu is in the middle of the ranking, occupying the 14th place, with a total of 7,298 points. This place includes the University of Sibiu in the list of those with scores above the national average, according to the report published by the ministry.

In last year’s report, the National Metaranking for 2022, ULBS ranked 20th with 4,721 points.

Thus, in 2023 ULBS surpassed universities such as “Ştefan Cel Mare” University from Suceava; University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Sciences and Technology “George Emil Palade” from Târgu Mureş; “Grigore T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Iasi or University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Cluj-Napoca.

Compared to the results of the other universities, ULBS achieved the highest increase compared to the previous year (+6 positions), compared to the Polytechnic University of Timișoara (+2), the University of Oradea (+1), the University of Craiova (+1) , “Titu Maiorescu” University from Bucharest (+1), University of Pitesti (+1) and University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine from Bucharest (+1).

“The fact that ULBS has become a constant presence in prestigious international rankings has generated the performance of placing us, within this national metaranking exercise, in the group of 14 universities above the national average score. We speak, therefore, about this honorable result with joy, but also with the assumption of the demands that derive from this position”, commented the rector Sorin Radu for Turnul Sfatului on this year’s report.

The National Metaranking is a mechanism for evaluating and ranking Romanian universities, based on the analysis of internationally recognized university rankings, but also a flexible and open tool for including other relevant rankings, as shown in the report.

At the level of 2023, the metaranking exercise included 28 Romanian state universities, out of a total of 52 such higher education institutions and two private universities.

The top 10 universities in Romania in 2023 is similar to the one in 2022, being occupied by comprehensive, technical and medical universities. The ranking is led by “Babeş-Bolyai” University from Cluj-Napoca (18.319 points), followed by the University of Bucharest (16.9851 points) and the Polytechnic University of Bucharest (15.7296 points).

The Ministry of Education specifies that the specific objectives of the metaranking aim to identify high-performing higher education institutions in terms of scientific activity and their contribution to the international academic community, reflected by their presence in the most important international rankings of European and Western universities; the ranking of higher education institutions in Romania based on the score obtained following the application of the standardized methodology related to the national metaranking exercise; to provide an appropriate analysis tool for national academic management.

We remind you that a parallel ranking for 2023 was published in December 2023 by the Qualitas Center of Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca. In this, ULBS was also placed in the middle of the ranking – 16th position or 11th place (along with the universities of Medicine from Iași and Târgu Mureș, the University of Agricultural Sciences from Cluj-Napoca, as well as the universities of Galați and Oradea).

The University Metaranking 2023 prepared by the Qualitas Center within UBB includes evaluations from renowned international rankings, such as Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings and others. Each ranking had the same weight in determining the final score of the universities. In other words, the University Metaranking was carried out according to the presence of universities in international rankings.

Universities were classified into five classes – upper, medium-upper, medium, lower-medium and lower – with points assigned accordingly: from 1 to 5. A university’s final score represented the sum of the points accumulated in each class in which it was placed included.
