The transfer from Cluj to Suceava took place yesterday with a SMURD helicopter. The 47-year-old man had suffered an ischemic stroke and his condition worsened in a few hours.
Walked between five hospitals
Andreea Milea, Observer reporter: The patient started to have specific symptoms at 11.30. At 2 p.m., he was administered the drugs that dissolve the blood clot, at the hospital in Cluj. However, in order for him to undergo an operation that would free his blood vessel, he had to be transferred 300 kilometers away.
5 clinics refused to take it. One center did not have the specific kit for the intervention called thrombectomy, which can save the lives of patients who have suffered a stroke. The other 4 did not have specialized staff, according to some sources. Cluj County Hospital claims in a statement that: Although, in our hospital, the procedure of thrombectomy by interventional radiology is successfully performed (…) at the moment we do not have a guard line with qualified personnel to perform this procedure in an emergency.
6 critical hours
The medical unit also says that it is starting the construction and operationalization of the Regional Center for Cerebrovascular Diseases and Neurosurgery, an investment in an advanced stage of implementation.
Dan Teodorovici, Suceava Hospital spokesperson: Because there was no considerable progress following the thrombolysis, it was decided to transfer him for an interventional radiology procedure. It was the only center in the country that had staff and kits available to carry out this intervention, here in Suceava.
For such cases, the first 6 hours from the onset of symptoms are critical. So are the chances of success for a blood clot extraction procedure.
Dan Teodorovici, spokesman for Suceava Hospital: In Romania, there are few centers, 9 centers that do this intervention and the same, and the kits are expensive, the staff is currently few. The personnel who carry out these interventions.
Andreea Milea, Observer reporter: The patient remained hospitalized at the hospital in Suceava under the observation of doctors, although his condition is good after the intervention.
