Gianina van Groningen and Ionela Cozmiuc brought the first gold medal for Romania in the double rowing event, light category. The two Romanians finished the race with a time of 07:29.63. A crew from Greece ranked second (07:31.94), and Italy ranked third (07:33.73).

It is the first European title conquered together for Gianina and Ionela, who are double world champions in this event. The two reunited this year after Gianina decided to take a break.

“We form a mature team and it will be the first time we compete again, after the Olympic Games in Tokyo. We do not underestimate any opponent, but we are determined to get a good result at the European Championships”, said Gianina van Groningen before leaving for Szeged, according to GSP.ro.

Romania also won a silver medal

Also on Saturday, the female four-frame team made up of Mădălina Bereş, Maria Lehaci, Magdalena Rusu and Amalia Bereş won the silver medal. The gold in this event was won by Great Britain.
