Another Boris Johnson blunder: He thanked Vladimir Putin for his “inspirational leadership”

Boris Johnson committed a major blunder during a debate in the House of Commons on Thursday. The former British prime minister thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for his “inspirational leadership” in place of Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.

The mistake occurred while Boris Johnson was speaking about Ukraine’s effort against the Russian invasion, in his first speech in the lower house of the British Parliament. The former British prime minister said it is important to “double our defense for Ukrainians” if Putin doubles his “aggression”, writes SkyNews.

Enumerating Ukraine’s successes, Boris Johnson mistakenly thanked Vladimir Putin, before quickly correcting himself and thanking Ukraine’s Zelensky.

“Thanks to the heroism of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, thanks in part to the weapons we are proud to provide, I congratulate my honorable friend (James Heappey) for describing the work of the British Armed Forces, the weapons we send, the huge list… Thank you, of course , the inspired leadership of Vladimir Putin,” Johnson said.

Immediately realizing his mistake, Boris Johnson added: “The inspired leadership of Volodymyr Zelensky. forgive me Russian forces have been repelled in recent days from large areas in the north-east of the country, around Kharkiv”.

Boris also said Britain must be prepared to provide “more military assistance” and economic support to Kiev amid the Russian invasion.

Johnson also warned against encouraging the Ukrainians to strike a deal to “trade land for peace” to allow Russian gas to flow to Europe.

During his time as Prime Minister, Boris Johnson made multiple visits to Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, to express his unwavering support for Ukraine.

During his tenure, the UK gave Ukraine £2.3 billion in aid to defend itself against Putin’s invasion.
