The number of Russian soldiers killed or wounded on the front in Ukraine is approaching half a million people, a figure that does not take into account the losses among private armies, such as the mercenary group Wagner. The assessment belongs to the British Ministry of Defense and was communicated by Secretary of State Leo Docherty, following an inquiry.

The questioning was made by John Healey, Labor MP and shadow defense minister, who asked for data on the ministry’s assessments of Russian military losses in Ukraine.

The answer came from Leo Docherty, Secretary of State for the Armed Forces at the British Ministry of Defence.

“We estimate that around 450,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded, and tens of thousands more have already defected since the beginning of the conflict. The number of personnel killed serving with Russian private military companies (PMCs) is unclear,” Leo Docherty reported, according to the UK Defense Journal.

The same source also revealed that “over 10,000 Russian armored vehicles, including nearly 3,000 main battle tanks, 109 aircraft, 136 helicopters, 346 unmanned aerial vehicles, 23 warships of all classes and over 1,500 artillery of all types have been destroyed, abandoned or captured by Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict”.

It should be noted that, at the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, in February 2022, Russia had deployed almost 200,000 soldiers to the borders of Ukraine, under the pretext of military exercises. This would mean that in two years, Russia lost more than twice as many men as it had prepared at the start of the war, which was intended to be a three-day “special military operation”.

The British Ministry of Defense estimates are not far off from those of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, which estimates that the Russian military has lost more than 465,000 soldiers in Ukraine.
