Kharkiv has become the target of Moscow’s increasingly persistent attacks, and the latest strikes have destroyed much of the city’s power grid, the city’s mayor, Ihor Terejov, admitted, according to the Kyiv Independent.

The eastern Ukrainian city has been on the frontline of Russian attacks since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022 and has seen an increase in strikes in recent weeks.

The attacks destroyed a power plant and all electrical substations in Ukraine’s second-largest city, Terehov said.

Asked about the reasons for the intensification of strikes, the mayor replied that he did not know what Russia’s plan was.

“Private (energy) infrastructure is also destroyed. Russia wants to intimidate us, but this is impossible,” the mayor said in an interview with the Liga.net website.

However, the mayor admitted that the current situation in the city is “very difficult”. The city’s humanitarian assistance centers, also known as “Invincibility Points”, are operating around the clock, he said.

“We went through harder times and we will survive these times as well,” Terehov also declared.

On March 29, after a large-scale attack, the state energy company Centrenergo announced that Russian troops had destroyed the Zmiiv thermal power plant in the Kharkiv region.

Other recent attacks in Kharkiv include a strike on March 30, in which a sliding projectile wounded one person, and an attack on March 27, in which a sliding munition killed a civilian and injured at least 19 others, including four children .
