It is the third conviction this week against the former Pakistan international cricket star, who was sentenced to 14 years in prison on Wednesday for gifts he received while in power. On Tuesday, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for leaking classified documents.
Aged 71, Khan, who has been in prison since August, may have difficulty recovering politically, even if his popularity remains intact, especially among young people, for whom he represents hope for change, writes Agerpres, citing AFP.
One of the Oxford graduate’s TikTok posts in December got over 135 million views in the first 36 hours after being broadcast.
“This shameful case is illogical. All this is happening for political reasons”, said his lawyer, Gohar Ali Khan, adding that the sentences will be contested in court.
Imran Khan, whose tenacity is admired by his supporters, has been banned from running for another five years and is being prosecuted in dozens of cases, which he considers politically motivated.
His wife, Bushra Bibi, whom he married in 2018, being his third marriage, was not spared either and was sentenced on Wednesday to the same 14-year prison term as him.

Khan was ousted as prime minister in a no-confidence vote in April 2022 after losing the support of the military, which was accused of helping him get elected four years ago.
