The president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, believes that it is possible to revolutionize the football economy by rationalizing transfer amounts with the help of an algorithm, reports Le Figaro, quoted by News.ro.

How is the market value of a footballer calculated? A delicate question. While objective criteria such as age, contract expiry date, position, number of matches played and goals scored in the championship and number of national team selections give an idea of a player’s price, the market sometimes gives the impression of being totally disconnected from reality, according to Le Figaro.

The recent rise in prices in Saudi Arabia and the colossal sums put on the table by several Saudi clubs to acquire athletes playing in European leagues have proven once again that negotiations are what ultimately sets the price between two parties.

A new revolution in the football economy?

FIFA seems ready to revolutionize the way transfers are made in football. At a legal conference in Tokyo, Gianni Infantino said he was open to a complete overhaul of the current system. He mentioned the possibility of establishing transfer amounts based on an algorithm that takes into account a multitude of data about an athlete.

The head of FIFA, who wants to “increase the transparency of the system” and “help those involved” in football, did not give more details about the evolution of a project that could lead to an earthquake in football.

Algorithms that are already in use

Algorithms are already used to assess the value of players, for example on the famous transfermarkt.de website, which regularly determines and updates the theoretical prices of thousands of players from around the world. The football observatory of the International Center for Studies and Sports (CIES) also has a software in which data is entered to establish the values. But these estimates are sometimes totally different from the sums that a club ultimately puts on the table when it comes to acquiring a player.
