The plane ticket does not always guarantee that you will go on vacation. Overbooking has become a habit for airlines, which have the right to leave you on the ground even if you have a valid ticket. The only and most convenient solution to avoid being left out is to check-in as early as possible to ensure your place.

With the increase in flights after the pandemic, the cases where passengers with valid tickets were not allowed to board the plane also increased.

Tickets without a seat on the plane

“The fact that you have reached the airport does not guarantee that you will get on the plane. Many flight operators resort to overbooking, that is, they sell more tickets than the number of available seats. The procedure is legal and practiced all over the world.” says Greta Neagu, Observer reporter.

“We see this overbooking more on the low cost companies that have also declared this fact – that they overbook on purpose. Most of the flights that are affected by this are those in Europe”, says Cosmin Vasile, tourism specialist.

In most situations, a ticket that is too cheap can mean that the airline is selling more tickets than the number of seats. Rome, London or Brussels are the destinations with the most cases of overbooking.

What happens if all passengers check-in

Let’s take the case of an airplane with 180 seats. The practice of overbooking means that an airline sells 190 tickets: it is statistically proven that between 3% and 5% of passengers do not show up for boarding. Practically, the operator takes a safety net so as not to fly at a loss. If all those who bought tickets for the respective race show up at the check-in desks, the company is obliged to offer the 10 passengers it cannot board a seat on the next race, accommodation or compensation.

“Overbooking doesn’t just happen for this reason. Another example would be, say, when the aircraft that is operating the flight is changed to one that has a lower capacity. At that time, there might be passengers who remain on the outside”, explains Irina Maria, tourism specialist.

How are passengers compensated who do not get on the plane, even though they have bought a ticket

If they find themselves at the boarding gate with more ticketed passengers than the number of seats on the plane, the airlines first look for passengers willing to give up that flight in exchange for compensation. They vary between 250 and 600 euros, depending on the distance to the destination.

“Passengers can ask the airline – which, in fact, has the obligation – to route them on the next available flight and, if it is later, to offer them accommodation and food or drinks”, says Claudia Tocilă, tourism specialist .

If you are faced with such a situation, you must obtain proof from the boarding gate that the airline refused to let you on the plane. This helps you, later, to obtain compensation. “It is very good to do the check-in online, so that we have confirmation of this, of the flight and arrive at the airport on time”, adds Cosmin Vasile, tourism specialist.

Compensation in case of overbooking

  • 250 euros – up to 1,500 km
  • 400 euros – over 1,500 km in the EU
  • 600 euros – over 3,500 km

Wizz Air, the company that most often resorts to overbooking

The largest airline in Romania in terms of number of passengers is, at the same time, the one that resorted to overbooking most often. Contacted by Observator reporters, Wizz Air representatives announce that they have taken additional measures to manage the high demand expected in the summer season.

Among the measures taken by Wizz Air in preparation for the summer season are:

  • efficient reorganization of the work schedule for the crew;
  • doubling the OCC (Operation Control Centre) team;
  • working closely with ground handling service providers;
  • complete automation of the reimbursement process – non-stop online assistance.
