Paul Whybrew, known as Tall Paul – “Paul the tall” because he was 1.93 tall, was the most faithful servant of Queen Elizabeth II. He was with the sovereign of Great Britain for 44 years and stayed by her side until the last moment of his life.

Now, with his hands clasped and eyes forward, Tall Paul attends the ceremonies and is one of three Queen’s staff members who have been offered to attend as a member of the family.

In addition to his senior position in the palace hierarchy, Tall Paul had a special relationship with Queen Elizabeth II. He was the one who handed the phone to the sovereign when Prince Harry called from California and the conversations were not exactly pleasant. Paul was busy tuning the radio to the Queen’s favorite stations, but also replacing glasses of gin and Dubonnet with apple juice when the monarch decided to stop drinking.
While Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-reigning sovereign, the butler received the Royal Victorian Order medal and was decorated accordingly, for being the longest-serving royal employee at Buckingham Palace.

In 1982, when an intruder entered the queen’s bedchamber, it was the servant who gave the man a drink and kept him talking until the police arrived. He was also with her on the day of Princess Diana’s funeral, in April 1986, when it was raining and Queen Elizabeth II was worried about the open coffin that would fill with water, the press wrote at the time.
