Cluj Day | The University of Cluj is playing the quarter-finals of the Romanian Cup today

The “students” are dueling with Hermannstadt for a place in the penultimate act of the competition.

Just like last season, Cluj and Sibiu meet in the quarter-finals of the Romanian Cup. In 2023, the “students” prevailed 2-1 and then reached the last act, which was played in Sibiu.

This year, the final will be played in the same place, and the players of Cluj University hope to at least repeat the performance from the previous season. Moreover, the history of direct disputes with Hermannstadt gives them hope.

The “Red Caps” lost only once against the Sibiu, in the very first official match played by the two teams, in the play-off for retention/promotion in the first league, in 2019. Since then, only Cluj victories or draws have followed.

In the current season, the game in Sibiu ended in a tie, score 2-2, with a goal scored in the last phase by the hosts, and in Cluj, the students of Ioan Ovidiu Sabău won 2-1, in the very first official match of 2024.

For the team from Cluj, it will be the 21st appearance in the quarter-finals of the Romanian Cup. The years in which the “students” reached this stage of the competition are: 1934, 1936, 1937, 1942, 1943, 1949, 1953, 1960, 1965, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1 997, 2015, 2021 and 2023. Subsequently, 11 semi-final qualifiers and 6 appearances in the final of the competition resulted.

The game between Cluj University and Hermannstadt will be played this evening, from 9:00 p.m.
