Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu had discussions with the Minister of Digitalization and the director of the Romanian Post on the subject of the strike.
The Head of the Government from Bucharest asked the two that the problem of the postmen be solved as soon as possible.
Ciolacu added that in the situation where the pensions do not reach their destination due to a strike at the Romanian Post Office, he believes that the director of the institution, Valentin Ștefan, will be dismissed.
“I had a discussion with the minister (ed. of Digitalization, Bogdan Ivan – PSD) and last night, I also had a discussion with the director (ed. of the Romanian Post, Valentin Ștefan – PNL). I told them to solve the problem as quickly as possible. If, God forbid, the pensions do not reach their destination because of a strike at the Romanian Post Office, I think the director will leave,” said Marcel Ciolacu.
General strike at the Romanian Post Office
On April 1, Romanian Post employees started a general strike, expressing their dissatisfaction with the salary level.
The postmen responsible for distributing the pensions stopped making deliveries, and union representatives claimed that employees from Bucharest were sent to other cities to replace those who were protesting.
After six hours of negotiations in which Minister Bogdan Ivan, the management of the Romanian Post and a delegation of the National Trade Union Bloc were involved, the trade unionists declared that they were considering the proposal made by the Ministry of Digitization and the Romanian Post, but announced that the strike would continue.
Strike in 30 counties in Romania
Ionel Oțelea, the president of the SLPR, said that the action is taking place in approximately 30 counties, according to the first evaluation carried out at the first hour.
Approximately 7,500 – 8,000 Romanian Post employees, members of their union, expressed their desire to participate in the strike. They also signed for it.
Oțelea specified that their union does not cover the entire country and all counties, but it is the representative union.
He noted that the action will continue until solutions are identified to resolve the union’s main demand.
“The action is taking place in about 30 counties, based on an assessment I made at the first hour. Some 7,500-8,000 people, employees of the Romanian Post Office, who are members of our union, have declared their desire to strike and signed for the strike. I specify that we do not cover the whole country and all the counties, but we are the representative union. The action will take place until solutions are identified that resolve the union’s main claim during the contract negotiation, namely the one related to salaries”, declared Ionel Oţelea, president of the SLPR, for AGERPRES.
The trade unionists demand an increase in salary by 400 lei
The president of the SLPR mentioned that the union members request an increase in the net salary by 400 lei.
They also demand an increase in the loyalty bonus for the installments agreed in the employment contract by 10%, 15% and 25%
This aspect was included in the contracts as early as 2019.
“I’m reminding you of something that is already well-known, most of the employees of the Post Office are at the minimum for the economy or close to the minimum, and when the minimum becomes 3,700 lei, 90% of the employees of the Post Office will be at this salary level if there is no intervention in – one way or another”, said Ionel Oțelea.
