An office within the Emergency Reception Unit (UPU) of the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital (SUUB), headed by Cătălin Cârstoiu, was urgently closed due to bed bugs.
One of SUUB’s UPU offices was closed immediately after a patient declared that he had bed bugs at home. The patient had arrived at the hospital due to respiratory failure caused by the inhalation of an insecticide. When asked under what circumstances he ended up inhaling the substance, he said that he had bedbugs in the house and did a disinsection.
The patient was immediately isolated and is being treated for his ailments in an isolated space within the UPU. The office where he was received and consulted was immediately closed and subjected to preventive disinfection.
During all this time, the activity of the other areas of the UPU continued normally.
In recent months, bedbugs have become a problem in Bucharest as well. We remind you that last week the schools in Sector 5 were closed for disinsection, also because of these insects.
Last spring, the National Library of Romania was also closed for disinsection, after bedbugs were discovered in the reading rooms.
Bed bugs are very small insects, which at maturity reach a length of 4-5 millimeters and a width of 1-3 millimeters. Their color varies from dark beige to tan, depending on how much blood they suck. They feed on blood. Their bite is deep and very painful. Often the bite site can become infected. So far there is no evidence that it could transmit any disease. They are dangerous in that they disturb sleep, and the discomfort caused by bites reduces the quality of life.
At the end of last year, Paris was the scene of an invasion of bed bugs. Local authorities in the French capital have taken and are still taking complex measures to combat these insects. The invasion caused a veritable collective hysteria among Parisians.
