A total of 11 people, including nine Cuban migrants, lost their lives on Saturday in the collision between a van, a motorcycle and a truck on a road in western Guatemala, the authorities announced, AFP notes.
The van was “carrying migrants (…) on their way to the United States,” the Institute for Migration in Guatemala stated in a statement.
The accident occurred on a road in the department of Suchitepequez, approximately 120 kilometers from the capital of Guatemala.
“Of the 11 victims, nine were of Cuban nationality and two from Guatemala,” according to the prosecutor’s office in the city of San Juan Bautista.
According to the Institute for Migration, which reported three women among the victims, it seems that “the van collided with the motorcycle and the truck”.
Every year, thousands of illegal migrants from Central America hit the road to try to reach the United States and escape gang violence and poverty. AGERPRES/(AS – editor: Alic Mîrza, online editor: Alexandru Cojocaru)
