iMessage would become compatible with the RCS protocol after the switch to iOS 18, not Apple, but Google announces.

In a new support page dedicated to the Google Messages application, the American giant writes in black and white that RCS (Rich Communication Services) support will be available on the iPhone from the fall.

Promoted by Google insistently for many years, RCS is a communication protocol that allows sending messages that include additional elements, including images and video, being considered the successor of the old SMS.

Google has already implemented RCS support in its messaging app, Messages, which comes pre-installed on Android smartphones, and would like Apple to do the same.

According to Google, Apple will announce support for RCS in the fall, and it should provide a better user experience than the old SMS.

Essentially, the introduction of Proton RCS on the iPhone will mean that its users will be able to exchange messages that also include high-resolution multimedia elements with Android smartphone users.

Apple announced in November that it was working on integrating the RCS protocol, but did not then provide a date for its actual release.
