Meta has published official plans to end software support for the original Oculus Quest 1. This VR device, released in 2019, will receive security updates for a few more months, but app and game developers will no longer be able to publish content for it on the official store in the near future. Those who want access to the latest Quest releases will need to upgrade to the Quest 2, Quest Pro, or Quest 3 models.

What features will remain available on Oculus Quest 1

The fact that Meta will no longer provide updates for the Quest 1 does not mean that the device will no longer work. The company announced that the last security update will come in August 2024, after the device has not received the latest system updates for several years already.

Originally, support for new games and apps was supposed to end on January 1, 2024, but Meta decided to offer an extension. This is only for four months, so as of April 30th, the Quest 1 will no longer receive new games or apps on the store. Developers will no longer be able to publish compatible content, and the Quest store will remain “frozen” with content available on April 30th. All other new apps or games will no longer be listed there.

The good news is that those still using Quest 1 won’t lose access to content they’ve already purchased, or the selection of compatible games and content. They will still be able to buy the games and apps already available. However, most new games could not run on the Quest 1 due to the already outdated processor, and the multiplayer system for games on the Quest 1 was disabled as early as March 2023.

Another feature that will remain available on the Oculus Quest is the PC headset, either wirelessly or wired. So, even if you can’t play the latest games for Meta Quest, you can still run the latest PC VR games without any problems.

Meta Quest 3 was released last fall, with a powerful processor, upgraded controllers and a significantly more compact design.
