Dominic Thiem (30) took the tennis world by surprise and made an announcement that no one expected.

Former world number three and winner of the US Open tournament in 2020, Dominic Thiem said that at the end of the season he will retire from the activity.

Thiem is ranked 117th in the world due to a persistent wrist injury.

“The 2024 season will be my last, I have decided to end my career”announced the 30-year-old player in a video clip published on Instagram.

Among the reasons behind this decision, Thiem cited the condition of his wrist, as well as a “deep feeling”, which has been animating him for a long time.

Thiem declared himself “grateful” for “incredible experience” which he lived with ”ups and downs”but also that he is impatient for what will follow, without giving details about his future.

• In his career, Thiem won 17 titles, including one Grand Slam (US Open in 2020), after a final with the German Alexander Zverev. He also played two finals at Roland Garros and one at the Australian Open, as well as two finals at the Champions Tour.

The Austrian has been out of action since mid-2021, due to a torn ligament in his right wrist, and since then he has failed to regain his best level, dropping to 352nd in the ATP rankings in 2022.

Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic paid tribute to Thiem this week at the ATP Masters 1,000 tournament in Rome, when rumors of a retirement were already circulating.

“He always showed respect on the pitch”said Djokovic, who highlighted “his incredible lapel, strength and intensity”notes Agerpres.
