A Digi24 team wanted to see how a Schengen Air trip goes. For the experiment, the capital of Austria was chosen as the destination, a country that blocks our total entry into the space of free movement. Although those who traveled by plane yesterday felt the difference, nothing has changed for drivers who want to cross the border.

Ironically, on the first day Romania was partially in the free movement area, one of the first planes to leave Otopeni was for Vienna.

Andreea Gheorghe, Digi24 reporter: “It’s 5 o’clock in the morning, we have a flight to an EU country in an hour and a half. Until then I’ll try to show you what has changed on the way to the boarding gate, with the partial accession to Schengen

Not by chance, I chose Austria as a destination. It is the very country that opposed Romania entering the free destination area. Because I already checked in online, I scanned my boarding pass, put my bag on the lane and went straight to security.

However, it is interesting to see how things are in the area where our identity cards or passports should have been checked.

We are right in the area where we had to show the ballots and where most of the time there were queues where we waited tens of minutes. Now, there are no border guards in the allocated spaces, so we can go straight to the boarding gate.

No one checked my documents even upon landing, so everything went quickly. In just a few minutes we got out and reached the area where we can take a train, bus or even a taxi to get to the city.”

Now although we move noticeably easier when we go by plane, Austria still opposes our full accession to the free movement area. The most important stake, that of land transport after all, still remains a problem.
