The president of the Romanian Fencing Federation, Marius Florea, confirmed for Agerpres the passing away of Olympic vice-champion Florin Zalomir, who took his own life on Monday morning in his home in Otopeni.

Marius Florea confirmed the dark news, but did not want to make any other comments: “Unfortunately, I have no words!”.

Rareş Dumitrescu, the coach of the women’s saber team, a former colleague of Florin Zalomir, said that he did not expect him to commit such a gesture: “I don’t know the details. We were colleagues in the national team, then colleagues as coaches at CS Dinamo and we had a close relationship. But recently he had some family problems, which he kept personal, I don’t know too many details. I never expected such a gesture. He did not have an easy life, he had problems, he grew up without a father, he was away in the Legion for several years. He was a performance athlete, he had a well-built psyche, but it seems that something happened today because he resorted to this gesture. He chose the Gendarmerie two years ago, to fulfill his desire, after he had completed a cycle with Bianca Pascu, who gave up sports, and did not want to start with other children. He was married, he also has a daughter from his first marriage, he divorced a few years ago, after which he remarried a few weeks ago. But I understood that everything was not going smoothly and that a divorce had already begun”.

“Today, October 3, at 8:34 a.m., the Police Inspectorate of Ilfov County was notified by a woman about the fact that, in a building in the town of Otopeni, a man died in his home. Otopeni police officers went to the scene to carry out activities within their competence. The medical team that arrived at the scene declared the death of the man in question”, IPJ Ilfov informed in a statement.

The coroner from the Ilfov Forensic Medicine Service was notified.

The case will be taken over by the police officers of the Ilfov Criminal Investigation Service to carry out investigations, establish the factual and legal situation accurately and take the necessary legal measures.

“The gendarme was an officer in the General Directorate of Gendarmes of the Municipality of Bucharest and he was 41 years old. At the most recent psychological evaluation, he was declared fit. The circumstances in which the event occurred are to be elucidated by the competent institutions”, states the press office of the Romanian Gendarmerie.

Zalomir, 41, has numerous medals, the most important being the Olympic silver with the saber team in London, the world champion title with the team in 2009 and the European gold also with the team in 2006. At that edition in Izmir in 2006, he also won his only individual medal, a bronze one.

The gendarme was an officer in the General Directorate of Gendarmes of the Municipality of Bucharest and was 41 years old.

After winning the bronze medal at the World Fencing Championships in Nimes, he stayed in France and enlisted in the Foreign Legion, an elite unit of the French army. During his contract he was deployed to Afghanistan on a peacekeeping mission.
