The strong pedological drought affects several areas in Romania, according to the latest information from specialists. The ANM forecast comes with precise data related to this phenomenon.

What are the drought affected areas?

Between April 27 and May 3, 2024, the National Meteorological Administration (ANM) indicates the presence of a moderate and strong pedological drought in autumn wheat crops, affecting large areas in Moldova, Dobrogea and Oltenia, with local manifestation points and in the areas of Muntenia and Transylvania.

According to the forecast of ANM specialists, soil moisture at depths between 0 and 100 cm will record low and particularly low values ​​in the mentioned regions, with the exception of some areas in Maramureș, Crișana and Banat, where the water reserve will be within satisfactory limits. The moisture deficit will be evident in the upper soil layers (0-20 cm), especially in Oltenia, Banat and some areas of Muntenia.

The vegetative processes of the plants will evolve normally, with slight intensifications in the plain regions of the south and west, while in the depressions of eastern Transylvania and northern Moldova plant growth will be slower.

Autumn cereal crops will be mainly in growing stages and the general vegetation condition will be good. The canola fields will continue to bloom and the sunflowers will be in the early stages of growth.

The process of germination and emergence will continue in corn crops in certain regions, and in sugar beet and potato plantations the first stages of vegetation growth will be recorded.

In general, weather conditions will be favorable for agricultural work and temperatures will rise slightly, being in the normal range for this period, with average daytime temperatures between 9 and 18 degrees Celsius at the beginning and between 10 and 21 degrees Celsius towards the end of the range. The precipitation will be local, sometimes in the form of showers, accompanied by electrical phenomena and temporary intensification of the wind.
