A torchlight retreat takes place in Bucharest, on Romanian Gendarmerie Day. The Road Brigade informs the drivers that the participants will move on the first traffic lane.

The torchlight retreat takes place in the center of the Capital, on the following route: National Art Museum – Calea Victoriei – Military Circle – United Nations Bridge – left Independence Splai – right Unirii Blvd – end point Constituetiei Square.

Romanian Gendarmerie Day is marked every year on April 3, and this year it was 174 years since its establishment. This date represents the moment when the act of establishment of the gendarmerie “Legislation for the reformation of the Corps of Servants in the Gendarmerie” was signed in 1850, by the Moldovan gentleman, Grigore Alexandru Ghica (1849-1853), according to the official portal www.jandarmeriaromana.ro.

The legislation promulgated by Ghica was the basis of all the laws that followed, its principles remaining valid throughout the history of the Romanian Gendarmerie.

The need to develop a law for the organization of the Gendarmerie throughout the country led to the promulgation of the Law for the organization of the rural Gendarmerie, through Royal Decree no. 2919 of August 30, 1893, followed by the Regulation on the Application of the Rural Gendarmerie Law of September 1, 1893.

The activity of the Romanian Gendarmerie is currently regulated by Law no. 550 of November 29, 2004, which establishes the status, attributions and competences of the institution, organization and management, rights and obligations of the institution’s staff.

According to the law, “The Romanian Gendarmerie is the specialized institution of the state, with military status, a component of the Ministry of Administration and Interior, which exercises, in accordance with the law, its attributions regarding the defense of public order and peace, the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens, property public and private, to the prevention and discovery of crimes and other violations of the laws in force, as well as to the protection of the fundamental institutions of the state and the fight against acts of terrorism”.
