The Mureş County Museum announced, on Wednesday, the discovery of the first Eneolithic treasure in the county, which could be documented in situ by specialists, within the radius of the town of Sânişor, thanks to a member of the community of amateur archaeologists in Romania, Narcis-George Carțiş, the discovery being the second of this kind from Transylvania, reports Agerpres.

“As a result of a new fruitful collaboration between Narcis-George Carţiş and the Mureş County Museum, a small Eneolithic deposit was discovered the other day in the boundaries of Sânişor, Livezeni commune. Due to the fact that at the time of discovery the metal pieces were left in the ground, the museum team consisting of Rita E. Németh, Botond Rezi and Daniel Cioată managed to document in situ and recover a small deposit of metal pieces. This consists of two whole copper axes with crossed arms and a fragmentary third. They were deposited in an oval pit, at a relatively shallow depth, without other archaeological materials. The small discovery can be dated to the beginning of the Eneolithic era (ca. 4,300-3,900 BC), being the product of a developed metallurgy, which for the first time manages to produce the first authentic pieces of metal, in contrast to the hammer axes of the previous period”, a announced the Mureş County Museum, on Facebook.

According to the Museum, the deposit from Sânişor becomes the first Eneolithic treasure documented by specialists in Mureş county and the second in Transylvania, after the one discovered in Ariusd (Covasna county), since 1910.

“After the restoration and scientific valorization, the discovered pieces will be part of a future exhibition of the museum”, stated the Mureş County Museum, which labeled the discovery as a “unpublished historical one”. AGERPRES / (AS – author: Dorina Matiş, editor: Marius Frățila)
