The death toll from the fire that struck a residential building in Istanbul is 29, Governor Davut Gul reported. Three people are injured. “An investigation is underway,” the authorities added.

The fire broke out in the basement of a 16-story building in Gayrettepe, in the central district of Beşiktaş. Istanbul’s newly re-elected mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, who went to the scene, said there was a night club in the basement.

“The fire is under control. We hope there will be no more victims,” ​​said Imamoglu, sending “condolences” to the relatives of the dead and injured.

Five people were detained in Turkey for questioning in connection with the fire. This was reported by the Minister of Justice, Yilmaz Tunc, explaining that among those arrested were the managers of the club and a person in charge of the renovation works.

The nightclub, which was closed for renovations, was located on the ground floor of a 16-story residential building in the Beşiktaş neighborhood on the European side of the city crossed by the Bosphorus.

Istanbul Governor Davut Gul told reporters at the scene that the cause of the fire was under investigation and that the victims were believed to be people involved in the renovation work.
