39 teachers participated in a workshop dedicated to reading among children, hosted by IL Caragiale School in Sibiu

On March 30, between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., at the IL Caragiale Secondary School in Sibiu, a free workshop was held to support the development of literacy in the primary cycle, dedicated to teachers in Sibiu. It was an interactive activity, with exchanges of experience and practical applications, in which 39 teachers from the entire county of Sibiu participated.

“All children read”, that’s what the workshop was called, and within it the educational resources developed in the “Schools with scLipici” program were presented, as well as the results obtained so far by the teaching staff who used the proposed approaches and the resources offered in the classroom.

“Through the workshop we are addressing interested primary school teachers interested in improving their teaching practices and inspiring a passion for reading and writing in their students. In Sibiu, it was an interactive educational experience, focused on scientifically validated approaches for improving reading and writing in young school-aged children. During the workshop, the participants had an introduction to these approaches, explored relevant resources and materials and benefited from practical demonstrations”, says Maria Denov, the teacher who facilitated the organization of this course.

According to her, a key activity was the “Eaty Monster”, where participants built a monster and created requirements for it. These requirements were then explained in front of everyone to show how to put the learned method into practice.

To allow the participants to share ideas and explore various aspects of literacy development in the primary cycle, at the end of the workshop there was an exchange of good practices, but also interactive discussions.

“Learning to read and write is a big effort for every child. If the brain is naturally wired to learn to communicate orally, literacy skills are learned acquisitions and require a lot of science and effort on the part of the teacher. This workshop is designed to provide essential guidance and resources in the learning process of primary school students,” says Maria Denov.

Participating in the free course, a teacher from Bârghiș shared the fact that she has the second grade, with a group of 12 students. He spoke with great joy on his face that they all know how to read and write. She was very happy that, in collaboration with the village librarian, she supported a series of beautiful activities through which she managed to convince the children to go and borrow books from the library in their free time.

Schools with scLipici is the early literacy development program created especially for children in primary education who do not read at the level corresponding to the class, did not attend kindergarten regularly, did not have stories, do not have adults at home who can help them practice reading – the writing. The efforts of those involved begin with access to appropriate books for each beginning reader and continue with resources, activities and training for teachers, parents and volunteers from disadvantaged communities so that every child succeeds in developing this basic competence by the end of the 4th grade.

“We invest in training and mentoring teachers while the practice takes place in their own classrooms, supporting children who perform the lowest on literacy assessments. We provide each child with a package containing 10 books and worksheets created according to the latest standards in the field, enough for the whole school year. And because teachers no longer have to run for resources, they can focus on working extra with the students who need support the most. The resources are for preparatory class students, where, at the moment, there are no free auxiliary materials granted by the Ministry”, says Sorana Pogăcean, manager of training and development Fundația Noi Orizonturi.

The Sibiu workshop was carried out in partnership with the County School Inspectorate, the Sibiu Teachers’ Association and the “Ion Luca Caragiale” High School.
