The 2024 Highway Code sets various speed limits depending on the type of vehicle and the type of road. Here are the maximum speed limits when towing a trailer or caravan.

According to the law, drivers are required to respect speed limits on different categories of roads.

These limits range from 30 km/h, the lowest limit, to 130 km/h, the highest limit.

These speed limits are imposed according to the type of road and the experience of the driver, and for vehicles towing trailers or caravans they are lower than for ordinary vehicles.

Here are the speed limits for vehicles towing trailers or caravans:

  • 120 km/h on the highway
  • 110 km/h on expressways
  • 90 km/h on European national roads
  • 80 km/h on the other categories of roads (national or county)
  • 50 km/h in the locality.

In areas of dangerous bends, intersections or pedestrian crossings, the road administrator may limit the maximum speed to a level considered safe. Thus, on a national road we can encounter areas where the maximum speed is 30 km/h.

In addition, by law, novice drivers (who have had their license for less than a year) are required to drive 20 km/h below the maximum speed limit.

The maximum speed at which you can travel when towing a trailer or caravan

When towing a caravan or trailer, with a Category B license, you must meet several conditions:

  • the weight of the trailer or caravan does not exceed 750 kg.
  • the weight of the assembly (driving vehicle + towed equipment) does not exceed 3,500 kg.
  • the weight of the trailer does not exceed that of the vehicle.

When the weight of the assembly exceeds 3,500 kg, but is up to 4,250 kg, category B “extended” is needed. And if the assembly is over 4.25 tons, then the driver will need a Category BE permit.

“The maximum permitted speed outside the towns for vehicles towing trailers or semi-trailers is 10 km/h lower than the maximum permitted speed for the category to which the pulling vehicle belongs,” the traffic law states.

So the speed limit for those towing a trailer or caravan is:

  • 120 km/h on the highway
  • 110 km/h on expressways
  • 90 km/h on European national roads
  • 80 km/h on the other categories of roads (national or county)
  • 50 km/h in the locality.

How much is the fine for speeding?

Fines for speeding vary depending on the degree of speeding and can go as far as driving license suspension in some cases, according to Pro Motor.

The fine point is 165 lei, and for exceeding the speed, penalties between 2 and 20 fine points are applied.

Penalties applied depending on the speed with which you exceeded the limit:

  • 10 – 20 km/h: 2 – 3 penalty points
  • 21 – 30 km/h: 4 – 5 penalty points
  • 31 – 40 km/h: 6 – 8 penalty points
  • 41 – 50 km/h: 9 – 20 penalty points
  • over 50 km/h: 9 – 20 fine points + driving license suspension for 90 days
  • over 70 km/h: 9 – 20 fine points + driving license suspension for 120 days.

Therefore, the fine for speeding is at least 330 lei, for those who do not drive more than 20 km/h over the imposed limit.

On the other hand, drivers who exceed the maximum speed by more than 40 km/h risk a penalty of up to 3,300 lei. In addition, they will also be elected with a suspended license.
