In France, pranks are known as “poisson d’avril” (“April fish”), and this name also dates back to the 16th century.

The gifts that were given in April were often of a food nature. That date corresponds to the end of Lent, a period in which the consumption of meat is forbidden among Christians, and fish is allowed on certain occasions. When April Fool’s jokes became more and more elaborate, one of the most common tricks consisted of offering “fake fish” (made of paper or other materials).
