Romania hit the international market. One of the most famous animals sells like hot cakes in countries like Italy, Spain or France. As it is a rare meat, it is no wonder that a kilogram ends up costing a small fortune. This is what animal the lustful people from abroad are fighting for.

Rabbit breeding, one of the most profitable businesses in Romania

It’s been a long time, there’s not much left until Easter. Usually, on the occasion of these holidays, Romanians consume a lot of lamb. But lately, it seems that lamb has started to be replaced by rabbit. Rabbit meat is lower in calories, and that is why it is on the list of preferences of many people.

In Romania, the demand for rabbit meat is constantly growing. Unfortunately, at the moment, our country is not doing well at rabbit meat production. Although countries such as France, Italy, the Czech Republic or Spain request such meat, Romania cannot ensure the necessary export.

The main “guilty” factor for this is the lack of farmers to raise rabbits. And, even so, in precarious conditions, Romania managed to secure over 80% of the total rabbit meat consumed in countries such as Germany, Italy or Poland.

More and more rabbit meat began to be consumed not only abroad. Locally, some of the biggest supermarkets have started to stock rabbit meat. This is a clear sign that Romanians’ preferences have changed.

How much rabbit meat is sold

In the period close to Easter, a single kilogram of rabbit meat costs 59 lei. The price is a little higher than that of lamb, but the specialists are sounding the alarm. Before putting the meat in the shopping cart, customers should make sure that it is fresh and does not pose a health hazard.

Supermarkets in Romania usually get their supplies from local farmers. Here, the price for rabbit meat is lower and its quality is superior. Because stores often stock small quantities, there is no risk of spoilage at all.

If rabbit meat is now in high demand, a few years ago, Romania exported wild rabbits. In 2010, our country exported more than 300 specimens of wild rabbits to Italy.

“The strangest transfer in the history of football” was made! The explanation is adequate

The rabbits were put in special cages, then they were sent for tests to confirm whether or not they were healthy. The purpose of this export of hares was to populate the hunting funds.

“About sending rabbits to Italy we can say that it is already a tradition. The order was higher than in previous years. That is why it is even more difficult to honor”said, a few years ago, Cătălin Matei, head of the Olt Forestry Directorate, according to dcnews.ro.
