Nicolae Ciucă, the president of the Senate, claims that Romanians should not be afraid, but the law that prepares the population for war must be “primed”. The statement comes in the context in which the Chief of the Defense Staff, General Gheorghiţă Vlad, stated at Free Europe that the introduction of a voluntary military service, aimed at young people between 18 and 35 years of age, is desired. And the president of the Senate, Nicolae Ciucă, is of the opinion that voluntary military training is an option for Romanians who want to join the army.

The President of the Senate Nicolae Ciucă was asked, on Prima TV, whether Romania needs a law to prepare the population for war.

“Romania needs everything necessary to be able to defend itself. That’s why the decisions taken for a budget of 2.5% of GDP for Defense were necessary, maybe more than that is needed. There were years when the institution of the Army was somehow forgotten in terms of budget allocations”, said Nicolae Ciucă.

The President of the Senate was warned that some Romanians might panic when they hear about a law that prepares the population for war.

“You don’t have to be scared. The Chief of Defense will have to elaborate a bit, it was not very well understood. I understood exactly what he wanted to say, because it was about a law for the preparation of the territory and the population for defense, which already exists, but it is about one that should be applied and adapted to the current context and conditions”. explained the president of the Senate, on Prima TV.

Nicolae Ciucă does not support the reintroduction of mandatory military service, but only voluntary military service.

“It is very difficult to talk about the reintroduction of compulsory military service as long as we have reduced the Army. The army was the first institution in this country that was transformed, it was modernized, reducing its numbers from 342,000 to 90,000 – respectively 75,000 active military personnel, respectively 15,000 contractual civilian personnel. At the moment, it is very difficult to redo everything related to the logistics of the mandatory military service. As such, voluntary military service, as is already carried out for reservists, can be an option for those who want to join the Army, but not mandatory”, concluded Ciucă.

The Chief of the Defense Staff, General Gheorghiţă Vlad, stated at Free Europe that he wants to introduce a voluntary military service, aimed at young people between 18 and 35 years of age, who want to wear the military uniform. He mentioned that the necessary tools must be found to have a prepared population.

“It is a moment when all European nations must think about the preparation of the population and I do not want to send an alarmist message, but it is a reality in which we live”, he argued.

Also, General Gheorghiţă Vlad believes that the Russian Federation will not stop and, if it wins in Ukraine, then the main target will be the Republic of Moldova.

“The population of Romania, like the entire population of the European Union, of Europe, must be concerned and we must adopt the appropriate measures to be prepared”, he declared, when asked if, in the context of the warnings of several political leaders according to which the civilian population they should prepare both psychologically and practically for a possible or an eventual conflict with Russia, the Romanians should also prepare.
