Just three days after Austria’s interior minister announced that he would vote against Romania, a delegation from the OMV Petrom company, led by the president of the Supervisory Board, Alfred Stern, visited the Cotroceni Palace.

In a press release sent after the discussions, the presidential administration said that OMV will announce the final investment decision for the Black Sea gas exploitation in the middle of next year.

The management of OMV presented the status of the project and the key steps taken, assuming the commitment to adopt the final investment decision in mid-2023, so that the exploitation of natural gas from the Neptun Deep perimeter will start as soon as possible.

Political sources cited by stirileprotv.ro claim that the representatives of OMV Petrom would also like to amend the offshore law so that the state maintains the royalties for the gas they will exploit at the current level and renounces the right of pre-emption. This would mean that the representatives of the Austrian company will not have to first offer the Romanian state for the exploited gas. One day after the visit from Cotroceni, the Chancellor of Austria, Karl Nehammer, declared that he would not support Romania’s accession to Schengen.

On the other hand, Croatia received Austria’s consent to enter Schengen, although initially this country had opposed it. At the end of last month, Croatia signed a joint declaration with Austria and Germany for the construction of a gas pipeline to transport gas from the Croatian island of Krk to the two countries.
