This year, Cluj celebrates Romania’s National Day with events in Mihai Viteazul Square, Avram Iancu Square and Unirii Square. There will be the traditional military parade, but also a folklore regalia, concerts, fireworks and drones.

The City Hall of Cluj-Napoca is preparing numerous events and special moments, for Cluj residents and tourists, on the occasion of Romania’s National Day. December 1, 2022 marks the 104th anniversary of the Union of Transylvania with Romania.

The City Hall of Cluj-Napoca, the Institution of the Prefect of Cluj County and the 4th “Gemina” Infantry Division open the events of December 1st with the ceremonial laying of wreaths and wreaths of flowers at the equestrian statue of Mihai the Brave, from 9 o’clock. The events continue in Avram Iancu Square where, starting at 10:30 a.m., the official ceremony, parade with military and intervention equipment and a daytime fireworks show will take place.

Festive lighting, started on the first day of December

Unirii Square will once again be the epicenter of the events dedicated to Romania’s National Day. At 3 p.m., an exceptional folkloric Regal will begin, together with some of the most beloved folk music performers in our country. An awaited moment every year is the switching on of the festive lighting, which will take place at 19:00. Inna and Cargo will then perform on the stage in the city’s kilometer 0.

At 8 p.m., Cluj-Napoca City Hall invites the public to Avram Iancu Square to watch a unique show of fireworks and drones.

The town hall “breaks” almost 150,000 euros for December 1 and New Year’s Eve

Concerts, drones, fireworks and laser shows are just some of the surprises prepared by Cluj-Napoca City Hall for December 1st and New Year’s Eve 2023. After two years of the pandemic and price increases, the municipality’s budget will be depleted by almost 150,000 euros for the organization the two events.

In September, the Local Council approved a project approving the allocation of 700,000 lei from the local budget for the year 2022 for the organization of the events December 1 – Romania’s National Day and New Year’s Eve 2023.

“Every year, December 1 – Romania’s National Day is marked in Cluj-Napoca through a series of official traditional events. The celebration of the New Year is a landmark event celebrated all over the world, depending on the tradition of each culture. The activities that the municipality will organize on the occasion of Romania’s National Day will focus on official traditional manifestations, but also extensive cultural-artistic actions that recreate the historical atmosphere. We want the show on New Year’s Eve to be a landmark of a year full of events that gives Cluj-Napoca the status of a European city in the heart of Transylvania”, the draft decision states.

In the quoted document it is also mentioned that “Cluj-Napoca municipality has become one of the most important cities in Europe in terms of cultural-artistic events”.

“With festivals of international stature such as TIFF, Untold, Sports Festival, Jazz in the Park, Street Food Festival, the municipality has raised the standards of this kind of activities. December 1 is a special moment of joy and celebration for Romanians and Cluj alike. They have made a nice habit of partying for Romanians and Cluj alike”, says the municipality.

“Considering the evolution of prices compared to 2009 (when the last event of this kind was organized), the requested budget for the two events is related to expenses related to the artists’ services (fee, transport, accommodation and meals) – 300,000 lei, the costs for architectural lighting – 100,000 lei, promotion of events – 20,000 lei, costs for drone and fireworks shows – 130,000 lei, creation of multimedia shows of lasers and synchronized video mapping on a soundtrack – 150,000 lei”, the document states.
