Artificial intelligence is viewed with fear for the way it may impact the electoral elections of the near future. But when Sam Altman, the man behind ChatGPT, was asked what he thought about this possibility, he seemed more concerned with another issue: the impact of AI on the economy, writes Bloomberg.
“I am afraid of the speed and magnitude that AI can have in the socio-economic sphere. I think the world still doesn’t realize what they’re dealing with,” said Sam Altman.
The CEO of OpenAI pointed out that people’s fears regarding the loss of jobs have decreased compared to last year, but that vigilance must be maintained because the possibility of the disappearance of millions of jobs is real.
“I’m afraid that the world is not taking seriously the effect of artificial intelligence on the economy, and that will create a real problem in the future,” Altman said.
New research reveals the extent to which AI can disrupt the economy. An International Monetary Fund study earlier this year found that technology could affect about 60% of jobs in advanced economies.
About half of these jobs can be automated, which could lead to fewer jobs and lower wages. Nearly 12 million US workers may have to change jobs by 2030, according to a separate McKinsey study.
Employees seem to be already feeling the effects of AI on their jobs. Some CEOs say they’ve replaced their staff with an AI chatbot, and some professionals have said they’ve lost jobs to tools like ChatGPT.
The most optimistic of employees believe that technology is fantastic if used correctly because it can increase productivity and help save time.
However, Altman remains concerned about the impact of AI on the labor market. Last year, he told CNBC in an interview that he was “a little scared” of ChatGPT, warning that his company’s arrival could mean the end of a lot of jobs.
