The largest strawberry producers in Romania have announced that they have already concluded contracts with the commercial chains for the first harvest of this year.
Under these conditions, Romanians want to know how much a kilogram of Romanian strawberries costs. As it is the first harvest, the price will be higher than the practical one for imported products. Thus, Romanians who want to buy the first Romanian strawberries this year will have to pay approximately 20 lei for a kilogram, but the producers do not exclude the possibility of finding them for 30 lei. Prices fluctuate, the cheapest being only 12 lei per kilogram.

“If you want to buy them from the market, think that a few good lei are added because the traders also want to earn. In our greenhouse, it costs 15 lei per kilogram. In the market, it might cost 20 lei”, said the strawberry producer from Arges.
The higher price of this year’s first Romanian strawberries is justified by the fact that they are juicier and more fragrant than those imported. In the field, the strawberries will only ripen at the beginning of May, when the producers will have to look for day laborers in order to be able to harvest the entire crop. The prices of strawberries will decrease only in the second part of May, say the producers.
Even if they already have signed contracts, the Romanian producers who promised to harvest early, the ripe quantities are still small.
“We have 2 hectares of strawberries. The prices are a bit higher than the imported ones, but our costs are also higher. We pay for the straw we put in them, the heat, the work, the picking. All of these mean costs. In order to take them to the market, we also add transport. Besides, we have to make a little profit too. That’s how you reach a price of 15-20 lei per kilogram,” mentions another producer from Romania.
