A Singapore Air Force F-16 has crashed at a military base in the island nation.

The incident took place on Wednesday at Tengah Air Base, according to Singapore’s Ministry of Defence.

“The plane encountered a problem during takeoff, and the pilot responded in accordance with emergency procedures,” the institution said in a statement, quoted by the international press.

According to the cited source, the pilot ejected successfully, is conscious and able to walk, and investigations into the causes of the plane crash are ongoing.

Second F-16 crash in less than ten days

This incident follows another involving an F-16 in the US on April 30.

US media reported at the time that a US Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon had crashed near Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, near White Sands National Park.

The F-16 belonged to the 49th Squadron and went down near the city of Alamogordo.

The pilot ejected and was transported by ambulance for medical treatment.

Military authorities warned that the crash area should be avoided by non-emergency personnel “to prevent possible exposure to hazardous chemicals on board the aircraft”.

The US crash site is adjacent to the site where the atomic bomb was tested in 1945

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash.

The New Mexico base adjoins the White Sands Missile Test Range.

This facility opened in 1941 and later included the Trinity Atomic Test Site, where the first detonation of a nuclear weapon took place during the Manhattan Project on July 16, 1945.
