Price cuts: Tesla Model 3 has reached the top of the cheapest electric cars in the US

--

In a market that has been at the vanguard of electric car launches, starting with the state of California, which granted facilities to buyers of such vehicles as early as a decade ago, the situation of sales of battery cars today is far from what automakers, politicians and even predicted the audience. After an explosive start, which took the brand to the top of the world sales, today Tesla is forced to cheapen the two models it sells globally every month, in order to reach high enough volumes to be able to finance the rest of the company’s activities.

The Tesla Model 3 has become one of the cheapest electric cars in the US, due to discounts applied by the manufacturer. Discounts are not unique, they are currently applied by absolutely all brands, but for Tesla, which was considered an aspirational brand, the fact that it currently sells one of the five cheapest electric cars on the US market shows how big is the change, according to the data analyzed by Profit.ro.

The cheapest car in the US electric car market, according to Automotive News, is the Nissan Leaf, which currently sells for $27,956 with all rebates and discounts applied, 19% below the average trading price of until now, which were $34,706. The model has reached the end of its life and should receive a new generation in 2024 – 2025, which somehow justifies the price cuts.

In second place is another Nissan model, the Ariya, which this time is not so old in the market. The small SUV has been delayed to 2022, which means it is only two years old. But the crises it went through were not auspicious, so today its sales are modest, and the price of $35,556, with which it is sold in the US at the moment, is far below the level of $51,438, as was the average trading price so far. With the price cuts, its sales experienced a revival.

In third place is the Hyundai Ioniq 6, a car with premium aspirations but currently down 22% from its trading price of $46,917. That translates to a price of $36,506, which it currently sells for.

Tesla Model 3 reached the fourth place in the ranking of the cheapest electric cars. At a reported $40,547 right now, the electric sedan is about $3,000 cheaper than its average trading price, which was reached through other previous price cuts. That means it has reached the level of a VW ID.3, a car with much less pretensions.

In fifth place is Toyota’s first electric vehicle, the bZ4X, which is currently selling for $40,646, although the average transaction price was a much higher $48,087, meaning the discount has reached 15%.

All prices are calculated with dealer and manufacturer discounts only, before the $7,500 US government rebate is calculated and applied.

The above prices are natural for a market that does not sell European electric cars that cost at least 10,000 euros less, such as Dacia Spring, Citroen e-C3, Hyundai Kona, Pel Corsa-e or Fiat 500-e .
