An unprecedented situation in the Black Sea. Due to the recent rains, several shoals of crucian carp from the lakes in the area have reached the sea water, in the area of ​​Tomis port. Unfortunately, they can only live in salt water for a few days.

Banks of carp can be seen these days in Tomis port in Constanţa. An unusual situation because this species usually lives in fresh waters.

Andreea Filip, Observer reporter: The recent heavy rains caused the Tăbăcăriei and Siutghiol lakes, which are connected to each other, to have an excess of water, which passes through the weir, under the Mamaia boulevard and ends up here in the sea. This is how some species of fish go from fresh water to salt water.

Once they arrived in the Black Sea, the fish stopped in the port of Tomis.

Adrian Bîlbă, biologist: One reason is that in the Tomis port there is a sheltered, quiet area suitable for their biology and another reason is that the Tomis port also has sources of fresh water, generated from the fluvial discharges in the Constanţa area. There is sweeter water and they have a chance to survive for a while.

Specialists say that even here the carp will not survive more than a few days.

Adrian Bîlbă, biologist: You can already see the fish in the video that they have a larger amount of mucus on their bodies, their fins are a little white, so they are already suffering.

Sentenced to death

Experts say that a solution would be to install special nets in the lake to stop the migration of fish.

Adrian Bîlbă, biologist: The lake has 100 hectares, it is connected to Siutghiol which has 2 thousand hectares. This weir takes the excess volume of water, it takes it with a very high flow rate, it could put a grill to hold the fish. At this rate and with a lot of household waste, it would block immediately. On the other hand, there is the vegetation that forms on the lake and blocks it. So it is not a solution.

Spring is the breeding season, and the fish are attracted by the currents and thus end up in the Black Sea.
