Editorial THE WALL STREET JOURNALtaken over by Rador Radio Romania:

Let’s call it a name: an American arms embargo against Israel. This is the incredible news this week, in which the Biden administration has confirmed that it has blocked arms shipments to the US’s closest ally in the Middle East, according to Rador Radio Romania.

The administration would like to focus on denying delivery of the 900-kilogram bombs, which it says are too destructive. What’s more, a professional army can use them in such a way as to limit their damage range. Biden also halted the delivery of 200-kilogram bombs and “Joint Direct Attack Munitions,” which can convert unguided bombs into precision “smart” bombs. Politico wrote that even small-caliber bombs are no longer being sent. And this newspaper added that the administration is still delaying signing an agreement on tank and mortar shells.

In other words, the White House message states, Israel must have neither big nor small bombs, neither “dumb” nor “smart” bombs, plus it will have to do without tanks and artillery. You see, now is not the time to send them weapons – because they would use them.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and other US officials explain that the purpose of the embargo – which they present to the public as a “pause” or “review” – is to prevent a wider attack by Israel on the Hamas stronghold called Rafah. This is the reward given to terrorists for using civilians as human shields.

Our newspaper has already written why it is necessary for Rafah to fall: the leaders of Hamas are sheltering there, four battalions of fighters, and hostages are also being held there. If Israel cannot complete its capture of Rafah, then Hamas has won. “I refuse to allow this to happen,” Biden declared on October 20, but at the time it cost the president nothing to make such statements, before the anti-Israel vote in Dearborn, Michigan, that captured the political attention of the whole country. Biden had also promised to make sure the Israelis “have what they need to protect their people, today and always” — a repeat of his promise on October 7 and then on October 10 that moved Israelis beyond words.

No matter how insistently Biden trumpets his “unwavering” support for Israel, the fact that he is now refusing to send arms to Israel puts the Jewish state at risk. Israel is now in the middle of a war, attacked on multiple fronts. Widowing him in American arms is an invitation for his enemies to take advantage of this advantageous opportunity, both in hostage negotiations and on the battlefield.

Not even four weeks have passed since Iran directly attacked Israel, and it was still the largest drone attack in history, to which were added about 150 ballistic and cruise missiles. Hezbollah attacks with dozens of rockets daily, depopulating northern Israel since seven months ago, a situation that persists and will persist. The terrorist group and Iran, which controls it, can decide at any moment to start an even wider war. Would it be okay for Israel to have bombs in that situation?

Israel must be prepared right now, and its enemies must know that the US is with it. That’s why Congress approved military aid to Israel in April by a vote of 79-18 in the Senate and 366-58 in the House. Overwhelming votes, then, including majorities from both parties and marking a relevant defeat for the anti-Israel left. Failing in its effort to disarm Israel, the left has lost. So that now Biden approves his policy.
