Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed that Mikhail Mishustin be re-appointed as prime minister, the speaker of the lower house of Parliament announced on Friday, which would mean keeping Putin’s technocratic boss in charge of the government as Moscow presses on with the war. his in Ukraine, writes Reuters, quoted by News.ro.

Mishustin’s Duma approval is almost certain, as there is virtually no opposition in Parliament, which has meant that Putin is supported in all his decisions, including the February 2022 invasion of Russia’s smaller neighbor.

As required by law in Russia, the Government resigned shortly before Putin, Russia’s supreme leader for nearly a quarter of a century, was to be sworn in for another six-year term on Tuesday after winning in March elections , an overwhelming victory.

“President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin submitted to the State Duma a proposal regarding the candidacy of Mikhail Vladimirovich Mişutin for the position of head of the Government”, stated, on Telegram, the president of the Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin.

“Today, the deputies will take a responsible decision on behalf of citizens with the right to vote on this issue,” he said.

Putin appointed Mishustin (58 years old) as prime minister in January 2020, replacing Dmitri Medvedev. Along with other members of Russia’s elite, he was targeted by Western sanctions in connection with the war in Ukraine.

Mishustin is the chief technocrat in the ruling apparatus, with no background in the security services, so he is not part of the so-called strongman faction of espionage veterans who are close to Putin. Before becoming prime minister, he headed the federal tax service, where he was credited with more than doubling revenue during his decade-long tenure.

Mishustin, who will speak in the Duma before the vote, must answer how he will solve a number of tasks outlined by Putin for the government, including “increasing the defense capability of our country”, said Volodin.
