“Recently, the justified grievances of military pensioners have intensified, and the associations and organizations of military personnel in reserve and retirement, gathered under the auspices of the Forum of Associative Structures of SAOPSN, have initiated steps to organize a street protest, through which to attract the public attention of the decisive political factors on the procrastination of legislative discrimination regarding the legal regime of state military pensions (regulated by Law no. 223/2015, with subsequent amendments)”, SNPPC sent, through a press release.

According to the cited document, these grievances became more acute after last year’s amendment of Law no. 223/2015 and the recent adoption of a normative act, by which only the amount of the military/professional rank of active personnel was increased, excluding military retirees from this right.

“To remedy this discrimination, SNPPC officially addressed the defense committees of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, in April this year, requesting the adoption of a legislative amendment to complete and amend Law no. 223/2015 on state military pensions, whereby the military/professional rank of reserve and retired cadres is permanently updated, in relation to the amount of active military cadres and policemen (I did not support from the beginning the amendment that referred to the updating of the rank reservists by changing the status of military personnel, because it did not meet the basic conditions regarding the legality and constitutionality of such an approach to the situation in question)”, the quoted document also states.

The trade unionists announce a protest for May 9.

“Given the fact that the legislative amendment in question is still being procrastinated, we consider that the protest organized by the SAOPSN forum, on May 9, 2024, starting at 12:00, near the MApN headquarters (on the sidewalk in front of the Cathedral of the Salvation of the Nation, as it appears from the protocol signed with the Capital City Hall), followed by a march to the Chamber of Deputies, is in line with the legitimate claim of military pensioners, a claim also supported by an official communique from May 6, of the Association of Reserve and Retired Military Cadres from the MAI ( ANCMRR)”, the press release also states.

“Irresponsible and Unconscious”

Also, the Federation of Trade Unions from the National Administration of Penitentiaries (FSANP) announced that it is joining the reservists’ protest organized on Thursday.

“Prison police officers and reservists demand the elimination of discrimination and inequities regarding state military pensions and the resolution of problems in the Romanian Army, unsafe situations that put Romania on the radar of vulnerable countries at the international level. The Federation of Trade Unions from the National Administration of Penitentiaries believes that the cover-up of recurrent problems in the army (lack of personnel, poor equipment, deprofessionalization) and the inability to create a pension mechanism that permanently keeps in touch with the costs of a decent life make the Ministry of National Defense (MApN) the main accomplice to the weakening of Romania’s security and defense in the very fragile geopolitical context”, the trade unionists from the penitentiary say.

The President of FSANP, Cosmin Dorobanţu, accuses the Minister of National Defense, Angel Tîlvăr, whom he categorizes as “irresponsible and unconscious, because he does not do any kind of diligence to solve the real problems of the active and/or reservists, an alarming situation that makes that thousands of soldiers resign annually, as the army is no longer an attractive field”.

“In the context of maintaining the conflagration at Romania’s borders, the unions in the penitentiaries ask the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, and the Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu to intervene directly to solve the inequities regarding the state military pensions, because the military reservist has become Cinderella in the story of the government written by PSD and PNL”, the trade unionists from the penitentiaries also argue.
