On Saturday, May 18, during the “Night of Museums” event, all those who are passionate about history can visit the Great Synagogue and the museum corner of the Jewish Community of Târgu Mureș.

Visiting hours are between 14:00 and 21:00, the last entrance at 20:30 and the last exit at 21:00.

Brief history of the Synagogue

“The great synagogue was built and inaugurated in 1900, by the “status quo” community (a reforming faction separated from the Transylvanian Jewish Orthodox community in the 19th century) headed by Dr. Wilhelm Joachim, chief rabbi and Farkas Mendel, president .

Designed by the Jewish architect Gartner Jakob from Vienna, the synagogue building in Târgu Mureș is among the most valuable buildings of religious architecture on the territory of Transylvania, respectively Romania. The capacity of the temple is 552 seats (314 seats on the ground floor (for men) and 238 seats on the balcony, seats dedicated to women and children.

On the front of the temple, above the central rosette, it is written in Hebrew: “My house will be a house of prayer for all peoples” (Isaiah 56/7). The museum corner presents the 250-year history of the Jewish community, which, together with Hungarians, Romanians and Germans, contributed fully to the construction of a modern Târgu Mureș. It has three rooms.

The first is dedicated to the early years: 1747-1900. In the second room there are exhibits related to the daily life of the Jews of Târgu Mureș regarding religion, cult objects, family photos. The third room is dedicated to the interwar period, the holocaust and personalities of Jewish origin from Târgu Mureș”it is specified on the page of the Mureș County Museum.
