In April 2024, we had the warmest April ever recorded. The global average temperature was more than +1.6 degrees Celsius higher than the average of the pre-industrial period, and Eastern Europe recorded record temperatures for this continent. This was the eleventh consecutive month in which new global temperature records were set.
The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service reported a global average temperature in April of over 21 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record set in 2016. In addition, the global average temperature was +0.73 degrees Celsius above the average of the period 1990-2020 and +1.61 degrees Celsius above the average of the pre-industrial period (1850 – 1900).
According to biziday.ro, Copernicus also shows that, in April 2024, the highest temperatures were recorded in the Eastern European regions. Only in Scandinavia and Iceland were temperatures below annual averages.
The last 12 months are now the warmest on Earth since climate records exist, with all-time temperature records broken in the last 11 months. More importantly, temperatures continue to rise, although the El Nino climate phenomenon stopped this spring.
According to the same source, researchers no longer have doubts that the limit of +1.5 degrees Celsius, established by the 2015 Paris Agreement, will be exceeded this year. They question whether this period could represent a turning point in the evolution of global climate.
