Romania is buying F-35 fighter jets and this model of plane can carry nuclear weapons.

The confirmation regarding the capability of the F-35 plane to carry nuclear weapons was provided, in front of a small group of Romanian journalists, as an answer to the question of the representative of the “România Liberă” newspaper, by a specialist of the Lockheed Martin company. When asked if the F-35 planes have this capability, the American specialist answered: “Yes, it was recently integrated.”

The American company Lockheed Martin is the one that produces the F-35 planes.

According to official data released by Lockheed Martin, an F-35 aircraft is equipped with a 25-millimeter cannon and can take on board air-to-air, air-to-surface or anti-ship missiles. In addition, the F-35A is now certified to carry B61-12 nuclear bombs.

Obviously, these data do not mean that the Romanian Army will receive nuclear bombs. What is known for sure is that the Romanian Air Force will receive 32 aircraft (two squadrons) of F-35A aircraft. This acquisition will cost around 6.5 billion dollars and has already been approved by the Romanian Parliament. In the coming months, so until the end of 2024, the signing of the purchase contract between Romania and the USA is expected.

Building an F-35 from scratch takes up to 23 months. The planes destined for Romania will start to be built only after the signing of the Romania-USA contract. No matter how optimistic the Romanian officials declare themselves and no matter how tense the situation in the Black Sea area is, the first F-35 aircraft will enter the endowment of the Romanian Air Force only after 2030.
