Bears give birth to more and more cubs, and if before it was a rarity for a female Carpathian bear to give birth to 3-4 cubs, now it is already a habit. In Vrancea, a female bear with five cubs, whose age was estimated by specialists to be approximately one year, was discovered the other day. This biological change may be the explanation for the increased number of bears that Romania has.

The bear was discovered the other day in Câmpuri commune, when the authorities mobilized following a call to 112, which announced that a bear cub was caught in a noose, and its mother was very close to the houses. In the end, it turned out that the bear cub was trapped in the thick vegetation, and the noise made by people and authorities to drive the bear away scared the cub, which got out of the vegetal trap by itself. The female and two cubs took refuge in the forest, but three cubs remained behind, as authorities who remained to monitor the area found.

They were up in the trees and only after a while when it was quiet did they come down and go to the den. The veterinarian Alexandru Pungă, who is also the director of AJVPS Vrancea, estimated the age of the cubs at a maximum of one year and says that such cases of bears having a large number of cubs are becoming more frequent.

“In recent years, the number of cubs, bears, bears, and females has started to increase more and more. Before, when you saw a bear with two cubs it was something. Now they started to be three, four and even five”said veterinarian Alexandru Pungă.

An explanation of the biological changes does not officially exist. The fact that female bears give birth to more cubs than in the past can instead explain the increase in the Carpathian bear population in our country. It is estimated that more than 500 specimens live in the forests of Vrancea alone, which is almost five times more than there should be.
