Headaches and migraines can be extremely uncomfortable for those who experience them. Over time, it has been speculated that certain foods, including cheese, could be a trigger or even cause of these conditions.

Cheese can give you migraines. How is such a thing possible?

There is a strong connection between the foods you eat and the recurrence of migraines. Moreover, the diet proved to be responsible, in 30% of cases, for the onset of intense headaches, accompanied by states of dizziness, nausea and bodily weakness.

The cheese contains tyrosine, an amino acid that is present in dietary protein and can influence neurotransmitters in the brain such as dopamine and norepinephrine. Cheese may also contain histamine and other biogenic substances which can affect chemical reactions in the brain and contribute to the development of headaches or migraines.

Aged cheese (especially) is NOT recommended

Some people are more sensitive to these substances than others, which means they may react to them with headaches or nagging migraines.

Assortments of aged cheese can cause headaches in sensitive people and can be a trigger for a migraines, because they contain very large amounts of tyramine, which has a direct effect on the blood vessels in the brain.

The main types of cheese you should avoid if you suffer from migraines/headaches:

  • cheese with mold
  • Brie cheese
  • Cheddar cheese
  • girl
  • gorgonzola
  • mozzarella
  • Parmesan
  • Swiss cheese
  • processed cheese

However, NOT all types of cheese have the same potential to cause headaches or migraines, and individual reactions may vary depending on the amount consumed and each person’s genetic makeup.
